DANA could arrive in Mexico by Christmas, they say. What is the risk and what will happen?

According to reports, a DANA could reach Mexico during the December season of 2024

Following the recent effects caused by the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) in Valencia, Spain, concern about the arrival of a similar phenomenon in other localities has increased among Mexican citizens, who fear that it will occur during the Christmas season .

The Spanish city was paralyzed by the arrival of DANA, due to torrential rains, flooding, unusual winds and cold fronts that caused power outages, debris and dozens of deaths, but could it happen in Mexico ? This is what experts say.

The Isolated Depression at High Levels, also known as Cold Drops , is a meteorological phenomenon that attracted worldwide attention due to the catastrophic scenario it caused in some areas of Spain. However, its normal intensity may not mean a potentially fatal risk .

José Martín Cortés , a meteorologist at Meteored, said that DANAs occur frequently during winter in some areas of the United States, France and Mexico, although they are a “completely normal” event characterized by scattered rain, snow, winds and cold temperatures of lesser intensity than winter storms. He also specified that the magnitude with which it hit the European continent is unusual.

“They are much smaller systems than winter storms, which originate when the jet stream is “compressed and strangled” giving rise to an isolated circulation, precisely a “Cold Drop” as it is known in several countries, trapping cold air in its center ,” he explained.
