First pic of Scots dad ‘with heart of gold’ who died after car burst into flames

Gary Sim died in hospital after emergency services were called to the scene of a crash in Johnstone on Saturday.

A dad-of-five who died after his car burst into flames on a Scots road has been named locally as Gary Sim.

Emergency services scrambled to Beith Road in Johnstone at around 2am on Saturday, November 9, following reports of a one-vehicle crash. The car was found ablaze and the 53-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but he sadly passed away a short time later.

The avid Rangers fan leaves behind five children.

His son, Gary, said: “I love you dad, you were my best friend. I need you back.”

His daughter Chandler, said: “I love you dad, I can’t believe this.”

Daughter Chloe added: “He’ll be looking down on us so proud and laughing at our antics together.”

A number of tributes have been left for Gary at the scene of the crash. Rangers scarves, strips and flags left by supporters honouring the Gers-fanatic.

Friend Danielle Fergusson added: “You were the nicest soul with a heart of pure gold. Will never forget what you did for me over the years, you were truly one of a kind. If love could have saved you, you would never have died.”

fundraiser has been set up to help the family with the funeral costs.

It reads: “Gary was the nicest person, with the biggest heart, and would have done anything for anyone.

“I would like to ask the community to please pull together in the memory of Gary and to help the family. Any amount, big or small, will help to take a small amount of pressure off at this terrible time for the family and it would be greatly appreciated.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2am on Saturday, November 9, officers attended a one-car crash on Beith Road in Johnstone.

“The Scottish Ambulance Service also attended and a 53-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he was pronounced dead.

“The car caught fire and it was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The road was closed and re-opened around 7.50am. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
